Quick Cleaning Hacks Before a Viewing

Category Advice

Selling your home can be an exciting new chapter, but getting your property ready for potential buyers can feel like a daunting task. Before the professional photographs are taken and the “For Sale” sign goes up, a good clean can make all the difference.

The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive cleaning products or dedicate an entire weekend to scrubbing every corner. A few clever cleaning hacks and a little preparation can help your home look fresh and inviting when viewers walk through the door.

Here are some easy ways to get your home viewer ready.

Start where the Buyers Starts

First impressions matter, so start at the entrance. Sweep the step and pathways, remove cobwebs and dead leaves, wipe down the front door, and tidy any pot plants. A clean, welcoming entrance makes the whole home feel well cared for.

Let the Cape Town Sunshine In.

Clean your windows and wipe down window frames and sills. You don't necessarily need specialist products, but warm water with a little dishwashing liquid can work well for everyday window cleaning. Finish with a clean, lint-free cloth to avoid streaks.

Remember to open curtains and blinds before a viewing. Clean windows combined with plenty of natural light can make rooms feel bigger, brighter and more inviting.

Give your Kitchen some Extra Attention

The kitchen is often one of the biggest selling points of a home, so it deserves some extra TLC.

Start by clearing unnecessary items from the countertops. Put away appliances that aren't used regularly and remove paperwork, shopping bags and other clutter.

For greasy cupboards, warm water with a little dishwashing liquid can help lift everyday grime. Don't forget the handles, which can quickly collect dirt and grease.

Give the stove and oven a thorough clean, wipe down the extractor fan and clean the microwave. Finally, empty the dustbin and take the rubbish outside before viewers arrive.

Quick hack: Place a bowl of lemon slices and water in the microwave and heat for a few minutes. The steam helps loosen stuck-on food while leaving a fresh citrus scent.

Make Bathrooms Sparkle

A clean bathroom can make a big difference to how buyers perceive a home. Remove toiletries from the basin and shower, clean the mirrors and polish taps until they shine. Pay attention to soap residue and watermarks around the shower and bath.

For stubborn limescale, white vinegar can help. Let it sit briefly before wiping and rinsing thoroughly, but check that it’s suitable for the surface first.

Don’t overlook the less obvious areas. Clean the toilet, wipe skirting boards and doors, empty the bin, and wash or replace tired-looking bath mats and towels.

Don't Forget the Floors

Clean floors can instantly make a home feel fresher. Vacuum carpets thoroughly, including corners and under furniture, and take extra care to remove pet hair and odours.

Sweep and mop tiled floors, especially in busy areas like the kitchen, entrance and passageways. For wooden or laminate floors, use a suitable cleaning product and avoid soaking them with water.

Tackle those Often-Forgotten Spots

When preparing for a home viewing, it's easy to focus on the obvious areas and overlook the small details.

Take a quick tour from a buyer's perspective and wipe down:

  • Light switches and plug points
  • Door and cupboard handles
  • Skirting boards
  • Ceiling fans
  • Window sills
  • Remote controls
  • Stair railings
  • Tops of appliances
  • Mirrors and glass surfaces

These details may not be the first things viewers notice, but built-up dust can make a home feel less clean and well maintained.

Make it Smell like Home

A clean-smelling home can help viewers feel comfortable as soon as they walk through the door.

Rather than overwhelming the space with strong air fresheners, focus on removing unpleasant smells. Empty bins, clean pet areas, air out bathrooms and wash and dry damp towels.

Open windows where possible to let fresh air circulate. You can also simmer water with lemon slices, cinnamon or a few herbs for a gentle, natural fragrance – just never leave anything unattended.

Give your Outdoor Areas some Love

Outdoor living is an important part of many homes, so don't neglect your patio, braai area or garden.

Sweep patios and outdoor entertainment areas, wipe down outdoor furniture and clean the braai. Remove leaves and debris from around the garden and make sure the lawn is neat.

If you have a pool, ensure it is clean and inviting. Even a small outdoor area can become a selling feature when it is presented as a space where buyers can relax and entertain.

Do a Final “Viewer Check”

Before your estate agent arrives with potential buyers, take ten minutes to walk through your home as though you’re seeing it for the first time.

Open curtains and blinds, switch on lights where needed, put away dishes, close toilet lids and remove laundry from washing lines or drying racks. Make the beds and straighten cushions and throws.

If possible, open a few windows to freshen the air and make sure pets are safely out of the way during the viewing.

Remember, clean doesn’t have to mean perfect. Buyers understand that a home is lived in. What matters is creating a space that feels cared for, comfortable and ready for its next chapter.

From the RED Properties team

When you’re selling your home, we’re not just looking at the bricks and bathrooms.

We’re looking at what will make a buyer walk through the front door and think:

“Yep. I could live here.”

And sometimes, that starts with nothing more complicated than a clean kitchen, a fresh-smelling bathroom and hiding the laundry basket before we arrive.

We won’t judge.

Promise.
