Smash, Sizzle & Serve
Big flavour, crispy edges and a whole lot of lekker!
There’s something irresistible about a good smash burger. Think crispy, caramelised edges, a juicy centre, melted cheese and a soft, pillowy bun. Simple? Yes. Boring? Absolutely not! These flavour-packed beauties prove that sometimes the best things in life are wonderfully uncomplicated.
Born in classic American diner culture, the smash burger started with a ball of ground beef pressed firmly onto a scorching-hot griddle. The result? A thin patty with those deliciously crispy, golden-brown edges and a juicy middle that keeps you coming back for another bite. Today, this humble burger has become a worldwide favourite, and Cape Town’s food scene is happily joining the party.
And really, what’s not to love? Whether you’re catching up with friends, treating the family after a busy Saturday, or enjoying a laid-back supper after exploring our beautiful Winelands, a smash burger fits the occasion perfectly. Add a few golden fries, a cold drink and good company, and suddenly your ordinary Tuesday is looking rather delicious!
So, if your taste buds are ready for a little adventure, here are three local spots serving up their own take on the smash burger. No passport required, just an appetite!
PRIMA Burgers, Durbanville
Proper beef, handmade buns and burgers with personality.
Right here in the Northern Suburbs, PRIMA Burgers in Durbanville is putting serious flavour between two buns. With a philosophy centred on doing things properly, PRIMA uses 100% veld-reared beef and handmade brioche buns. Because when the basics are this good, you’re already off to a cracking start!
You’ll find this trendy, casual burger spot at 43 Main Road, in the Spar Centre, directly across from Durbanville High School. It’s a convenient stop whether you’re out running errands, meeting a friend for lunch or simply following your nose towards something delicious. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, exceptionally friendly service and a menu that caters to all sorts of burger cravings.
The Rustenburger is a tempting choice, featuring a 150g grass-fed beef patty, cheddar, diced onions, house pickles, tomato sauce and mustard for R120. Prefer something from the Príma range? The Príma Classic keeps things beautifully traditional with American cheddar, pickles and signature sauces, while the Veldfire turns up the heat with pickled jalapeños. Chicken lovers aren’t forgotten either, thanks to the Pollo.
And for those days when a single patty simply won’t cut it, there’s the Old Money. Two 150g patties, crispy smoked brisket, cheese and caramelised onions make this one for the seriously hungry. Diet plans? Best not to bring them along!
PRIMA offers both sit-down and takeaway options, so you can settle in for a leisurely lunch or grab your burger on the go. Just be prepared for a busy spell during peak lunch hours. Good burgers have a way of attracting a crowd!
Boer and Butcher Burger Bar, Durbanville
From farm roots to burger heaven.
There’s something special about food with a story, especially when that story begins in the Western Cape countryside. Boer and Butcher grew from a small farm-based butchery into a destination for people who appreciate quality meat and a genuine farm-to-table approach.
The journey began in 2009 on a livestock farm near Darling and Hopefield, where the original vleiskamer was built around a simple philosophy: good produce starts with good farming. The first Durbanville store opened in 2013, and the business has since expanded while staying true to its roots, working with a trusted network of farmers and carefully selecting livestock to maintain quality and consistency.
Today, you can find Boer and Butcher in Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Boston, Paarl, Haasendal and at SOMM @ Village Deli in Val de Vie Estate. That’s a fair bit of countryside goodness spread across the Cape!
Now for the delicious part. Their Woelige Woensdag specials give you a very good reason to look forward to midweek. For just R55, you can tuck into a Smash Burger featuring a brioche bun, mayo, caramelised onions, cheddar and a house pickle. Feeling extra peckish? Upgrade to a meal with fries and a 300ml drink for R89.
Feeding the whole family? The Family Feast makes life easy, with four Smash Burgers, 800g of fries, 12 onion rings and a 2L drink for R295. That’s a lot of happy mouths around the table, without everyone having to negotiate who gets the last onion ring!
Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between errands or planning an easy family supper, Boer and Butcher brings a little farm-fresh spirit to your burger fix. And with those Wednesday specials, you might just find yourself counting down to hump day.
Billy Boys & Co, Sea Point
City energy, big burgers and a side of seaside vibes.
Fancy taking your burger adventure a little closer to the Atlantic? Head towards Sea Point, where Billy Boys & Co brings together indulgent smash burgers, good music and a lively neighbourhood atmosphere.
Cape Town has no shortage of beautiful places to enjoy a meal, but there’s something particularly appealing about Sea Point. With its ocean views, buzzing promenade and laid-back coastal energy, it’s the perfect setting for a casual outing that could easily turn into a longer evening with friends.
Built around a love for great food, quality ingredients and good company, Billy Boys & Co gives classic comfort food its own distinctive twist. Expect a relaxed setting, plenty of personality and an upbeat soundtrack to accompany your meal.
If you like your burgers loaded, the Joe-Burger deserves your attention. Smashed beef patties are topped with slow-roasted brisket, cheddar cheese, bacon bits and smoky BBQ sauce. It’s rich, indulgent and definitely not the burger to order when you’re planning to share just one bite!
Prefer a little heat? The Chilli Billy brings together smashed beef, cheddar, pickled jalapeño and a pineapple habanero cream. That sweet-meets-spicy combination is bound to wake up your taste buds.
With its late-afternoon-to-late-night offering and lively neighbourhood feel, Billy Boys & Co is a good option for everything from a casual burger stop to an evening catching up with friends.
